Vaasa Science Park is an important part of the development of the Vaasa and Ostrobothnia Region. The goals are:

•    to create structured science park processes as a part of the innovation system
•    to promote research cooperation between companies and universities
•    to promote the planning and construction of Innohouse, the meeting place of the science park

The Science Park supports the innovation system of the region

The intention of Vaasa Science Park is with the innovation system to promote the operations and communication between science, the economic life and public parties (e.g. investors). The Science Park operates in the innovation system from its own viewpoint both according to the Triple Helix Model, and to the System Supplier Model.

In the Triple Helix Model, Vaasa Science Park in the region’s operator network is an important developer of the innovation system. The Science Park extensively utilises the multidisciplinary expertise of the region (universities). Multidisciplinary Research and Development (R&D) projects are carried out in cooperation with the economic life and different public organisations. The operators meet in the Science Park and as a result, innovations are born.

In the future, Vaasa Science Park will increasingly operate as a system supplier in extensive multidisciplinary R&D projects between universities and the economic life.

The System Supplier Model of the operations of Vaasa Science Park in the innovation system.



According to the System Supplier Model, Vaasa Science Park offers services from the consortium’s researchers, faculties and R&D units to different groups (e.g. companies, universities and other interest groups). This model is utilised especially in the Business Road program.

Vaasa Science Park is being built as a project

Vaasa Science Park is the most important project of the technology centre Oy Merinova Ab. The project is in the stage of the development of its operational functions. The current stage will last to the end of the year 2010, by which time the operations and services will have been developed and are successfully being applied. The next stage of the Science Park Project starts at the beginning of 2011, by which time a functioning business model will have been created.


Stage 1: 09/2007 – 03/2008
- Investors: Vasek (AKO) and the city of Vaasa
- Carried out by the technology centre Merinova
Stage 2: 04/2008 – 12/2010
- Investors: Regional Council of Ostrobothnia (EAKR), the city of Vaasa and the University of Vaasa
- Carried out by: the technology centre Merinova

Vaasa Science Park is the meeting place of good cooperation. The Science Park brings together the representatives of different parties that need each other: the economic life and the experts of the seven university units in the region.  The meetings of these parties will generate innovations, successful business and unique development projects.
The Vaasa Region aims at the top – with cooperation.
